When temperatures drop, the last thing you want is cold air sneaking into your home. Even worse, your energy bills shooting through the roof.
If your home feels drafty, your roof and attic are likely to blame.
Here’s how to stop cold air leaks, keep your house warm, and protect your roof this winter.
Your home's temperature management system is located in your attic. Heat escapes from thin, unequal, or antiquated insulation, allowing cool air to take its place.
This raises heating expenses in addition to making your house uncomfortable.
✅ What to do: Look for areas where insulation is compacted or missing. Add extra layers of fiberglass or blown-in insulation to reach the recommended R-value for your region (usually R-38 or higher).
💡 Pro tip: A well-insulated attic helps prevent ice dams by keeping the roof surface cold enough to stop uneven snow melting.
Air can seep through tiny openings around chimneys, vent pipes, and attic access doors even with adequate insulation. It's like leaving a tiny window open all winter long with those leaks.
✅ What to do: Use spray foam or caulk to seal gaps. Install weatherstripping on attic doors or hatches. Check light fixtures, fans, and electrical boxes for drafts.
Moisture and chilly air might enter your attic space if your roof has cracks, missing shingles, or damaged flashing. That may eventually result in wood damage, mold, and increased heating expenses.
✅ What to do: Look for lifted or curling shingles and reseal cracked flashing around vents and chimneys.
As much as I say this one, I can't stress it enough. Ice accumulates at the edge of the roof due to clogged gutters, which stop water from draining correctly.
This accelerates deterioration by trapping moisture and cold air against your roof deck.
✅ What to do: Clear out leaves and debris before the first freeze. Also add gutter guards to minimize future buildup.
Although you can do a lot on your own, a skilled roofer can find insulating gaps and hidden leaks that the typical homeowner cannot detect.
✅ What to do: As much as it may seem like I am trying to sell myself, I will always suggest to book a free winter roof inspection and ask about an attic energy audit.
It’s a quick, affordable way to make sure your home stays warm all season long.
A healthy roof and attic are the foundation of a comfortable, energy-efficient house. Early insulation, sealing, and inspection will keep you warm and reduce your energy expenses throughout the winter.
