When the temperatures drop, your roof becomes your home’s first line of defense against snow, ice, and freezing rain. But if your roof isn’t prepared, winter can expose small problems that turn into expensive damage.
Leaks and water damage can result from melting snow and ice seeping beneath even a single broken or missing shingle.
✅ Why It Matters: Refreezing water that seeps beneath shingles might lift more shingles and worsen the issue.
Fix It: Schedule a quick inspection with a professional before the first snowfall. Replacing damaged shingles early prevents major repair bills later.
As much as it may seem like it's not that big of a deal now, leaves, sticks, and debris in your gutters stop water from draining properly. This then can lead to ice dams. An ice dam is a ridge of ice that forms at the edge of a roof, preventing melting snow from draining off.
✅ Why It Matters: Water from ice dams on your roof is forced beneath the shingles and into your attic.
Fix It: Clean your gutters now or install gutter guards to keep them flowing freely all season long.
Your roof's ability to withstand winter is greatly influenced by your attic. Warm air escapes your house and melts the snow unevenly on your roof if you don't have enough insulation or airflow.
✅ Why It Matters: This uneven melting and refreezing creates ice dams and shortens your roof’s lifespan.
Fix It: This is one where I would also recommend getting a professional to add insulation where it’s thin and make sure vents are clear so warm air can escape properly.
One of the first places leaks begin is where your roof meets walls, chimneys, or pipes. Flashing seals these joints.
✅ Why It Matters: Snowmelt is able to penetrate into those gaps and cause gradual breaches that don't become apparent until spring.
Fix It: Check flashing for cracks or rust and reseal or replace damaged sections before the next storm and before snowfall hits your home.
Even if everything looks fine from the ground, many winter roof problems start small and out of sight.
✅ Why It Matters: Yes, even though I am a roofer, I will always suggest a professional roofer can identify early warning indicators that homeowners frequently overlook, saving you thousands of dollars on repairs.
Fix It: My suggestion to you is to book a free roof inspection before winter weather hits and get peace of mind all season long. Even if it's not with me ;)
By the time you notice a leak or ice dam, the damage is already done. Prevent problems now with a simple inspection. It’s faster, easier, and free, rather than fixing a roof mid-winter.
My Suggestion: I would be more than happy to answer all your questions and potentially set up a free inspection. First you can book a call with me so we can introduce ourselves to each other.
